See below for the full run-down.
A new role for CR1

The Scott CR1 ushered in the ultralight carbon road bike wars just a few years ago but with Addict now running the show it has been retasked for 2010 to cater to a more relaxed audience.

First and foremost is a softened ride quality - in contrast to the original's occasionally harsh personality - courtesy of 'Scott Dampering System' seat stays and chain stays.

According to Scott, the flattened sections in the stays allow much more wheel movement over road irregularities than before – up to 2mm depending on the weight of the rider and how hard the bump is hit.

Though softer-riding and more relaxed in position, the new cr1 is still a high-tech machine complete with carbon housing stops.: though softer-riding and more relaxed in position, the new cr1 is still a high-tech machine complete with carbon housing stops.

Though softer-riding and more relaxed in position, the new CR1 is still a high-tech machine complete with carbon housing stops.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_m8FVAyyOmZY/S8l1TiPw-HI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/nHJd-Gp_QLM/s400/1245743687456-1tldfkd9w3lvq-300-90-300-70.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461025001634330738" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_m8FVAyyOmZY/S8l1MXfhKAI/AAAAAAAAAFI/JR08coW1KA4/s400/1245744127548-5u2qhsfc2tv0-500-90-500-70.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461024878488528898" />

Though not suspension in the strict sense, Scott still expects that SDS's added cush will appeal to older or more casual riders wanting a racy-looking machine that's still comfortable over the long haul.

Further along that theme, head tube lengths have grown about 10mm across the size range and top tubes maintain their current lengths (still slightly shorter than the Addict) for a more upright riding position.

The 2010 CR1 won't be all about comfort, though: carbon dropouts replace the current aluminium ones, there's a new one-piece IMP (Integrated Molding Process) top tube-head tube-down tube assembly, and even optional press-fit bottom bracket cups on the top-end model.

Even with the additional tech features, frame weight will actually increase a bit relative to the existing CR1. Claimed weight for a large frame is now 860g for the top-end version with an HMX carbon fibre blend while HMF versions will be around 930g.

Final specifications are still being determined but Scott plans to offer models ranging from approximately US$1,699 to US$6,299. Production models are slated for delivery around the end of 2009.
New colour scheme for Addict

In other road news, the flagship Addict road frame is unchanged for 2010 save for new colour schemes and the innovative Plasma 3 time trial/triathlon frame will remain a team-only item for now as development is still in progress.
Revamped Addict CX

Scott will, however, add a revamped aluminium Addict CX 'cross frame for 2010 with a flattened top tube for more comfortable shouldering. Both that and the carbon fibre version are expected to be available around late July or August.
New integrated controls for Spark and Genius

Both the Spark cross-country and Genius all-mountain full-suspension platforms will be essentially carried over for 2010 save for one key addition: a new Twinloc handlebar remote that now controls both the proprietary rear shocks and select forks from Fox Racing Shox and DT Swiss.

The new twinloc provides more suspension control on-the-fly but the additional cables do clutter up the front end a bit.: the new twinloc provides more suspension control on-the-fly but the additional cables do clutter up the front end a bit.

The new Twinloc remote will now control both the rear shock as well as select forks from Fox Racing Shox and DT Swiss.

Twinloc will replace the current Tracloc remote and will feature three settings: position #1 will leave both ends in the fully active, full-travel configuration; position #2 will stiffen and shorten rear wheel travel in a 'traction mode' but still leave the fork in the full-open setting; and position #3 will lock out both ends.

Scott says riders will have quicker and more complete control over both suspension settings with a single lever to better suit the terrain at a given moment.

Presumably the new Twinloc should also be retrofittable to current Spark and Genius models as long as the appropriate forks or compression assemblies are installed as well.

In addition, the Scale hardtail line will gain a 29"-wheeled variant in the aluminium Scale 50. Though 29" devotees will likely lament the omission of a full-blown carbon version, Scott feels the US$1,599 target retail price will be better suited to those new to the segment while still offering a high-performance aluminium chassis.
Voltage freeride line-up introduced

At the other end of the spectrum, a new Voltage FR line will cater specifically to the park/slopestyle crowd with a burly aluminium frame and 135-180mm of travel plus an intentionally short and low geometry for maximum manoeuvrability. Three models will be offered from US$1,699 to US$3,499.

Two singlespeed Voltage SS hardtails will be on tap as well from US$849 to US$1,349, both with unique 'no-slip' horizontal dropouts that use additional aluminium inserts to prevent unwanted wheel movement.

Gambler will remain in the lineup for 2010 but with the advent of Voltage FR, will now be more singularly dedicated to downhill.
Finally – Scott soft goods for the US market

Scott has always had a remarkably comprehensive line of footwear and apparel in Europe but those offerings will now finally head to the US as well. Though helmets still won't be included for the American market, a full range of road, cross-country and gravity clothing will be brought in for 2010 along with a completely revamped collection of footwear.

Based on our previous experiences with Scott soft goods, American buyers should have quite a bit to look forward to.

You can follow BikeRadar on Twitter at twitter.com/bikeradar and on Facebook at facebook.com/BikeRadar.

SRAM's Newest Nine Speed MTB Cassette

<img style="float:right; As from May this year, Shimano will offer an additional satellite shift unit SW-7970 that offers a quick and easy possibility to shift the rear derailleur when riding with the hands on top of the handlebars. It eliminates the need to move the hand to the Dual Control Lever for shifting, especially important when riding on cobblestones or during climbing but also very convenient for Cyclo-Cross and touring.

This additional shift unit can be mounted easily anywhere on the top of the handlebar, around the stem mount position. The Di2 cable plugs in easily at the existing DURA-ACE Di2 Dual Control Levers ST-7970.

Crank Brothers (More Titanium)

Crank Brothers Candy 2Ti Pedals is a 2-sided pedal with 4-sided entry and 2 main components made of titanium.
Spindle: Stainless Steel

Body: Fiber Composite

Kick Plates: Stainless Steel, Ti Nitride Treatment

Wings: 6 AL / 4V Titanium

Spring: 300 Series Stainless Steel

Weight: 252g per pair

Includes: Standard Cleat (Road Cleat available separately), Shims, and Crank Brothers' 2 year manufacturer warranty

Release Angle: 15 degree or 20 degree

Hydraulic Shifting by 5rot

The Goat tipped us to a $2K hydraulic shifting system that’s made by 5rot. He is credited with several creations, including a 3883 gram (8.56 lbs) Addict. Sebastian was anxious to start his new trail bike tuning project, a Scott Genius. The starting point was a brand new IMP4 carbon Genius LTD frame equipped with the Equalizer2 TC shock providing 150mm travel and TC (Traction Control) at an already amazingly light 2250 grams (4.96 lbs).

After weeks of countless working hours, a new Genius was born from his workshop in the colors black and red. A brilliant and noble looking bicycle, equipped with the finest components, this unique creation will satisfy any light weight fanatic. This S.R. version Genius weighs just 8928 grams (19.68 lbs). So for all the “weight weenies” out there who want to build a lightweight trail bike, the Genius is a perfect base to start with.

Athertons ride new Saint to two rainbow jerseys

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_m8FVAyyOmZY/STwJSLHcV1I/AAAAAAAAACE/DBRaD1fxB9E/s400/athertons_ride_new_image_-Article-Single-image_dash_350_525.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277103071197681490" />
This weekend, Downhill mountain bikers Gee and Rachel Atherton each took victory at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Val di Sole, Italy. Both were riding the new Saint components, featuring awesome brake performance and a crispy shift feeling, combined with a more lightweight design.

As the baking sun ensured the track was hot and dry, all eyes were on the Athertons, particularly after an incredible display at the recent Mountain Bike World Cup in Andorra, when brother Dan also took the win, making it a triple-victory for the family – and for the new Saint as well. Unfortunately, Dan had to sit out the competition this week after breaking his collarbone...

Rachel was first at the start gate for the Women’s Downhill Final and being the favourite she completely fulfilled the expectations by crossing the line an astonishing 11.99 seconds ahead of her closest rival.

Next, pressure shifted directly to brother Gee, who now had to live up to the family name and pull off the double-win. Last down the hill, Gee had fellow Brit Steve Peat to beat, who in his illustrous career has never won the coveted rainbow jersey. Through the split and Gee was 2 seconds clear, a margin he managed to hold as he shot across the finish line and into the elated Atherton huddle – ensuring the family again made history and became the first to win two Mountain Bike World titles in the same year.

Congratulations to the riders and many thanks for introducing the new Saint at the highest level possible!

Amazing Prices For Bike Parts!!!!!

<img style="float:right; Cam McRae from NSMB.com got a chance to spin on the $6300 Scott Genius 20 last month and shared his thoughts in this thorough review. However, he only rode it on the buffed-out trails in Sun Valley, Idaho. I’m curious how it would ride on Moab’s Porcupine Rim or on the Wasatch Crest Trail. I didn’t see any Scott bikes at the Outdoor Demo either. Were they there? Maybe I just missed them?

Regardless of riding time, the Genius packs some serious travel into that svelte carbon frame. With 150mm of travel front and rear and 6 trim levels that start with the Genius 50 at $3450 on up to the creme-de-la-creme Limited that sets you back the cost of a very nice used car.

Some of the technology behind the Scott Genius LTD Limited includes:

150mm travel via Proprietary Equalizer2 TC shock (co-built by DT-Swiss)
DT-Swiss EXC 150 carbon-fiber fork (Saw this at Interbike… very sweet!)
Bar-mounted shock adjustment (lockout, 95mm Trac Mode or 150mm)
Carbon carbon everywhere–even dropouts and chainstays
Single-piece front triangle uses IMP4 technology (everyone else joins each tube after molding)
A svelte 4.05 lbs for the frame
Barely under 23 lbs. fully-built
The kicker… $13,224.99 MSRP (USD)

I’m not doubting that the Scott Genius LTD Limted is likely an awesome trailbike, but I’d be interested to see the sales projections for such an astronomically-priced bike. No doubt Scott USA’s engineers are masters of working with carbon-fiber and have worked hard on this showpiece, but the reality is who can afford to shell out that kind of coin on a bike? And, if they can afford that expensive of a bike, will they actually ride it? Who knows…

Maybe I can get my hands on one of them next year and find out for myself? scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Components'/>
SHIMANO XTR Rear Derailleur

Shimano presents a new XTR rear derailleur RD-M972, developed with the revolutionary “Shadow” technology that was introduced recently in the new Deore XT group. “Shadow” realizes an extra thin profile to minimize the chance of getting hit by a rock. A tree trunk. Or whatever else lies waiting on the trail.

The Shadow derailleur is 11-18 mm smaller than a conventional derailleur and it has a much thinner profile than any other rear derailleur in the market.

Furthermore it features an increased vertical stability to prevent hitting the chain stay in very bumpy terrain. No need to worry about your derailleur when taking extremely technical trails at high speed. Your derailleur will be steady and perform its tasks flawlessly.

This XTR deraileur has a modern, technical appearance characterized by a slightly redesigned “X”-shaped outer plate and a full carbon cage that combines a lightweight design with superior rigidity. The weight has been reduced to 180 grams that makes it the lightest derailleur in the Shimano range.

RD-M972 features a crisp shift feeling and the cable routing has been shortened since less cable simply means less friction for improved response. It will be available in a short cage and a long cage version, in Top-Normal design exclusively for a perfect set-up with Shimano’s popular Rapidfire Plus shifters.

Shimano will continue to offer the current Low-Normal and Top-Normal XTR rear derailleurs so more choice than ever since XTR is “Engineered for the way you ride”!

New Shimano Deore LX 2009

Shimano introduces several new components in the Deore LX and Deore mountain biking groups. Oh well, it gives me some time to write my review.

I still have a SRAM Gripshift on my trusty Trek 2000. Come to find out, that was SRAM's intro into the bicycle component marketplace in 1987.

For this test, I put the top of the line PG-970 11-23 9 speed cassette on my Orbea. Since I was being lazy, I left my Shimano chain on to see if there were any compatibility issues. According to SRAM, their chains are Shimano and Campy compatible while their cassettes are Shimano compatible.

I didn't have any trouble using the SRAM cassette with my Shimano components. Shifting was constant and I could run up and down the gears without any jumps or throws off the cassette or front rings. There was no difference detected when I used the SRAM chain. Shifting was precise and there was no hesitation. The hollow pin chain is lighter at 270 grams. It seemed to me that it didn't make as much noise as the Shimano. I am concerned about gunk building up in the holes of the links and foresee taking more time to clean it. The nickel plating will prevent corrosion.

The SRAM PG-970 11-23 cassette was noticeably light. The chrome plating made it stand out. An unusual feature was the orange colored translucent spacers between the gears. The mating of the plastic spacers to the gears was very refined and tightly assembled. The entire unit had a high level of quality from the main gear block down to the lock ring. There is only one visible rivet which is recessed. It consisted of 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21 and 23 teeth gears. There were numbered stampings indicating the amount of teeth on all but the 14 and 15 teeth gears. As I mentioned above, both chain combinations worked flawlessly with the PG-970 cassette.

Shifting was consistent throughout the big and little rings and going between the rings. I tried to make it jump off by applying power from the big ring but it held.

I know SRAM quality will stand up as my Gripshift is still going strong. Their components have also stood up in a little race called the Tour de France! I'm sure stage winner Tyler Hamilton and CSC teammates found them to work well. I appreciate SRAM as a company also. They are sponsors of national teams to regional and local racers. You can find them at road races and single track events. Their philosophy of making bicycling better holds true. I like the niche SRAM has made for itself. They seem to make specific products that do the job.

SRAM and Lehman Brothers Merchant Banking Finalize Strategic Investment

Chicago, September 30, 2008 — SRAM and Lehman Brothers Merchant Banking (LBMB) are pleased to announce that they have completed their transaction, giving LBMB a 40% stake in SRAM through a strategic investment.

"Getting to the finish line, given the current state of the financial markets, is a reflection of LBMB’s role as one of the leading private equity organizations in the middle market and our strong SRAM management team," said Stan Day, chief executive of SRAM.

"All of us at LBMB are thrilled to be closing our investment in SRAM. The company is a leader in its industry with tremendous momentum and a bright future. We look forward to working with SRAM’s management team to build the business and realize its full potential in the years to come," said Charlie Moore, LBMB managing director.

The transaction brings a number of opportunities for SRAM and the cycling industry, including:
*SRAM adds LBMB as very capable strategic financial partner to its shareholder base.
*The SRAM Cycling Advocacy Fund has been established with $10 million. These funds will be used over the next five years to support efforts to improve cycling infrastructure.
*This process has cast the cycling industry in a positive light and introduced it to a number of capital providers.

As a result of the transaction, Mr. Moore and Bill Lovejoy, also a managing director at LBMB, will join the SRAM Board of Directors. The SRAM management team remains intact.

Prior to the completion of the transaction, seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong confirmed his return to the sport of bike racing with the SRAM-supported Team Astana. Additionally, Mr. Armstrong has made a meaningful passive investment alongside LBMB to further strengthen his ties with SRAM.

Mr. Armstrong’s use of SRAM components will become a part of the SRAM overall marketing program. He will also serve as a technical advisor for SRAM’s product development teams alongside many of SRAM’s other established professional riders. Stan Day said "The entire organization welcomes Lance to the SRAM team. We are looking forward to his input and doing everything we can to support his return to racing".

Shimano announces voluntary recall of PRO, SHIMANO and SAINT cycling gloves

It has recently come to Shimano's attention that, contrary to its strict contractual specifications, certain PRO, SHIMANO and SAINT cycling gloves manufactured by Shimano's supplier in Pakistan contain traces of Benzidine in excess of the levels specified by EU regulations.

As a precaution, Shimano has voluntarily decided to recall all PRO, SHIMANO and SAINT cycling gloves which carry a label indicating that they were made in Pakistan, or which carry no label at all. Feel free to send feedback, news and releases to mtb@cyclingnews.com.

Battle brewing over Belgian start money
This is what usually happens when Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet-Tönissteiner) shows up to race.
Photo ©: AFP
The European cyclo-cross scene may be suffering under the weight of its own success, and several disgruntled players are pinning the blame on one man - the Lance Armstrong of 'cross - Sven Nys.

Nys has dominated the European 'cross seasons for several years now, and as a result, his value to race promoters has gone up - as has his appearance fees. While fans may clamour to get a glimpse of the Belgian champion, not everybody is happy with the situation. Unlike North America, where riders make their money solely from the cash prizes given out to the top finishers, European 'cross racers (or at least the big names) are paid start fees by the race organisers.

They can do this because, unlike North American races, fans must pay to get in to watch their heroes. Every weekend, upwards of 30,000 people pay 5-10 euros to drink beer and eat frites while watching the races in person, and hundreds of thousands more tune in to the races on television.

Nys is said to garner up to 8,000 euros just to show up at a race, but the manager of the team which fields some of his biggest rivals is concerned that such high start fees are hurting the sport.

Fidea team manager Hans van Kasteren directs a squad with two former World Champions, Bart Wellens and Erwin Vervecken, as well as a host of talented young riders. He is also the organiser of the GP Zonhoven, and worries that big starting fees are going to turn away fans if promoters have to raise the ticket prices for the events in order to afford to attract the sport's top names.

"The start fees are getting too high," he told sport.be. "We don't want to lose the average fans who come with their families and also want to buy some frites and beer [in Belgium, entrance to 'cross races is typically five to ten euro - ed.] These are the people that made 'cross big."

Van Kasteren said that he doesn't encourage his riders to ask for such high fees, and this has led to a disparity between Nys and his own riders, including Wellens and Vervecken. "Last year, [Nys], as a non-world champion asked for more than the year before when he won the World Cup and Belgian Championship," he argued, adding that cyclo-cross riders do not need to rely as much on appearance fees as they have in the past. "Cyclo-cross riders now have a very good monthly salary," he said.

Nys, for his part, said that his start fee for GvA and SP races had not changed as compared to last season. "It is only for the races that are not part of a series that I am asking for more." Nys added that despite his high fees he also offers something to the races. "Every organiser gets what they deserve: A Nys who flies, who provides a spectacle and who tries to win."

Nys' manager Christophe Impens van Golazo laughed about the criticism. "Nys is worth a lot more than 8,000 euro. A university study last year estimated his economic value to between 15,000 and 20,000 euro!"

On his 'blog, Nys simply was eager to get going with the racing. "I train and in about 10 days we have the first Superprestige. The best thing will be to answer with the pedals. No more words, just action."

Relentless 24-hour marathon next week

By BikeRadar

Riders can enter freelance, in pairs, or in teams of three or four. Instead of just bumping an inch of travel on to a lighter frame and sticking

This would be an ideal machine for the Mega Avalanche downhill run or any amount of similar Alpine shenanigans. The frame design is stunning and it looks good too but most importantly the unique suspension design is wonderfully effective.

Ride & handling: planted & capable
Getting the right set-up for the Remedy is crucial – too soft and it’s wallowy, too firm and you won’t feel the benefits. With correct sag, the rear end is very active throughout the stroke.

With a low main pivot, the Remedy uses a four-bar system to keep the bike as active as possible, but it doesn’t use a Horst Link. Instead there is Trek’s new Active Braking Pivot, which keeps the rear suspension working even if the wheel is fully locked.

A custom Fox RP23 shock with a big can offers supple action on small hits, with enough ramp-up for big hits.

The cockpit is long enough for efficient climbing, even with the 80mm stem, and the back end is short enough to flick the bike around – combination keeps the bike feeling planted. It’s low too – 14in centre-to-floor with huge 2.35in Kenda tyres – but not so low you bash your feet.

The frame was very stiff and tracked well. This was also noticeable under braking where the fore/aft rigidity of the fork through the E2 steerer prevailed – it feels better than a 1.125in set-up.

At 14.15kg (31.2lb) in a size large, you could knock a couple of pounds off with some mods, but as it is, the Remedy 8 is a very good bike.

Frame: roomy & low
The frame is made from Trek’s Alpha Red 7000 series aluminium, and features heavy hydroforming on the down and top tubes, but keeps a fairly traditional double diamond design.

The extremely low top tube (in relation to the size of the bike) allows a good standover height and the roomy 24in effective length lets you use a short stem without cramping your riding position.

Up front is a huge formed head tube that houses the E2 headset system, Trek’s unique design with a 1.5in lower race, a 1.125in upper race and a tapered fork steerer. This keeps weight down on the headset and stem and provides support for the 6in travel forks.

The head angle is nice and slack at 66.6 degrees, but the Rockshox Lyrik 2-Step fork allows a climbing-friendly 68.5 degrees in its short setting.

Equipment: effective gear
The Remedy is offered in three builds. Our mid-range model uses the excellent Rockshox Lyrik 2-Step fork with a Shimano Deore XT drivetrain and brake set, Bontrager Rhythm Comp wheels and Kenda Nevegal Dual Compound tyres.

The finishing kit includes a full width King Earl bar (we grumbled about the shorter 26in bar on pre-production bikes), an 80mm stem that’s both stiff and light, and a comfy Bontrager post and saddle combo. We ran a Crank Brothers Joplin seatpost on our bike, and it worked perfectly.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://worldbikenews.blogspot.com/2008/06/all-mountain-all-rounders-with-six.html' title='All-mountain all-rounders with six inches of travel are hard to do well. All Mountain, for those of you who (understandably) refuse to pay much attention to the latest marketing lingo, is shorthand for “Lighter than full-on freeride gear, but a little burlier than the garden variety, cross-country racer stuff.”

The Atlas is essentially a scaled-down version of Race Face’s brawny Diabolus freeride post. It features the same basic head design: a rear twin-bolt clamp that Race Face claims is able to disperse high impact loads more effectively than single-bolt head designs. The Atlas’ twin-bolt head is CNC machined from 6061 aluminum and allows for a wide range of tilt (though, honestly, how much tilt adjustment does anyone really need?) and fore-aft adjustment. The lower seatpost head is integrated into the shaft—another stength-boosting feature.

The Atlas’ 350-millimeter long, shaft is also made from 6061 aluminum and is shot peened for high impact strength and improved fatigue resistance. The Atlas is available in a wide range of diameters (from 26.8 all the way up to 31.6-millimeters) and comes with a lifetime warranty. Weight (for the 27.2-diameter version) is a respectable 275 grams. The Atlas is available in a black finish, a black finish, and, yup, a black finish.

Carradice upgrades mounting on new Super C panniers

British bike luggage maker Carradice has announced a new range of its famous Super C panniers which use Rixen and Kaul Klickfix mountings to attach the bags to the racks on your bike.

Carradice describes Rixen and Kaul as “the undisputed leader in pannier-fixing innovation” and says that the new Klickfix Modul system makes attaching and removing the revamped Super C panniers “a breeze”. The rail that mounts the hooks also includes loops for a shoulder strap, making it easier to carry the panniers off the bike.

The new fixing system works with a wider range of rack sizes, though Carradice recommends its own extensive Sherpa range which includes racks that fit suspensoin mountain bikes.

What hasn’t changed with the new Super Cs is the fabric. Carradice is known for its use of cotton duck, and it’s still the company’s material of choice: waterproof, tough, self-sealing at the seams and easily reproofed.

The new Super Cs should be in stores now. Shimano has combined all of its engineering resources with the latest technology to realize an increased level of perfection that will benefit professional riders as well as road racing enthusiasts. Besides offering a further improved performance and an attractive design, the weight is reduced significantly.

Crankset
The seventh generation DURA-ACE group introduces revolutionary technology into the road racing scene. Highlight is the HOLLOWTECH II crankset that combines an attractive aerodynamic design with remarkable weight saving and completely new engineering features.
This high tech beauty is developed out of thin walled, hollow forged aluminum and features some novelties in road racing technology. The outer chainring for example is hollow which saves weight and makes it 20% stiffer at the same time for an optimal power transfer.

There is a wide choice of FC-7900 chainring combinations: 53/42T, 52-39T, 53/39T, 54/42T, 55/42T and 56/44T. Crank arm lengths: 165 – 180mm with 2,5mm steps. Also a DURA-ACE compact crankset FC-7950 is available with a 50/34T chainring combination. The chainring teeth have been redesigned for an improved chain contact to improve power transfer. Furthermore, the bottom bracket features improved sealing for smoother rotation and longer durability.

This crankset weighs 725 grams including bottom bracket. This is 15 grams lighter than the current DURA-ACE crankset FC-7800. Rigidity remains the same.

Dual Control Levers
The new Dual Control Levers show the importance of state-of-the-art technology with regard to performance enhancing design. The lever blades are made of multiple carbon layers, finished with a unidirectional carbon fiber top layer with a special coating. This advanced technology ensures the best performance in terms of rigidity, durability and lightweight design.
Shift cables are hidden under the handlebar tape without sacrificing performance. This was made possible by the development of a new internal mechanism in combination with new PTFE coated inner cables.
The Dual Control Levers have a reach adjustment mechanism that will better accommodate smaller hands and a wider assortment of bar bends. Furthermore, the shift lever has a 20% shorter stroke for faster shifting. The hoods have an ergonomic design for increased comfort, even at long distance rides.

The shifters feature integrated buttons on top of the hoods to operate the new wireless FLIGHTDECK computer without the need to take the hands of the handlebar. FLIGHTDECK measures data such as heart rate, altitude, inclination, cadence, gear position and more. It works with coded wireless signals that prevent interference from other electronic units. The new FLIGHTDECK computer can be used to make a wireless connection with a PC to analyse riding data (software is included). The Dual Control Levers are over 40 grams lighter than the current version at 378 grams per pair.
Besides Dual Control Levers, also new bar end shifters and down tube shifters will be available to match the new DURA-ACE. A carbon brake lever BL-TT79 for aero handlebars will be available for time trial and triathlon usage.

Chain
The new DURA-ACE chain CN-7900 carries a lot of innovative technology. It has an asymmetric design and features redesigned outer plates to reduce the chance of chain suck. Also the inner plates have been redesigned for an improved contact with the cassette sprockets. The result is smoother shifting even under high load, for example when climbing or sprinting. Furthermore the chain runs smoother and is more silent than its predecessors and the new design allows a higher durability as well.
CN-7900 can be mounted with a reusable quicklink SM-CN79 that can be (dis)connected without using any tools. This quicklink is compatible with the other Shimano 10-speed chains as well. Also a normal connecting pin can be used. The chain has been developed with hollow pins and perforated inner plates to make it lighter. Weight of this chain is 252 grams, which is almost 30 grams lighter than the current version.

Derailleurs
The rear derailleur has a wide gear ratio and can be used with sprockets of maximum 28 teeth. It is compatible with the use of a compact crankset without the need for a medium cage derailleur. It has a full carbon pulley plate and a carbon/resin composite P-body that helps to reduce the weight to 166 grams.

The front derailleur has a lightweight design and an optimum spring tension for feather light downshifting. Trimming the outer chainring is no longer needed to allow a better concentration on the ride. The efficiency has been improved by using a stiffer and solid wide link design. Weight is only 67 grams.

Brakes
The brakes feature new compound brake shoes that doubles the brake performance in wet circumstances and improves stopping power in dry weather by 20%. These new brake shoes feature a longer durability as well.
The brakes have been developed with an enhanced brake arch proportion for an increased linear response. A lower cable stopper ensures a better cable routing and reduced cable friction. The Dual-Pivot caliper brakes feature also a spring tension adjuster and adjustable toe-in brake shoes The dual pivot bolt and center bolt as well as the inner cable fixing bolts are made of titanium for an optimised lightweight design of 293 grams per set.

Cassette/Hub/Freehub
Shimano has developed a super lightweight yet very rigid aluminum cassette sprocket carrier. Also the separate sprockets have been redesigned for more robust shifting performance and to save weight. This 10-speed HYPERGLIDE cassette will be available in a wider variation of combinations: 11-21T, 11-23T, 11-25T, 11-27T, 11-28T, 12-23T, 12-25T, 12-27T. The four biggest sprockets are made of titanium. Weight is 163 grams (11-23T).

The hub and freehub have an increased rigidity that improves rotation even when the quick release is tightened strongly. Furthermore, they have been developed with a completely new bearing adjustment system that enables easy manual adjustment without the use of a cone wrench.

This DURA-ACE group is the ultimate combination of state-of-the-art technology, lightweight design and innovative appearance. It sets a new standard in road racing technology, in which details are nowadays more important than ever. These reports, however, have been in the form of small rumblings. We’ve been on top of the news with several reports here on bikemag.com (including this excellent report by reporter Jarad Petroske, SRAM Bids on the Road Market ).

Now, just weeks after announcing their sponsorship of road racing’s elite Orbea team, SRAM has sent out a press release that spills the beans on several key details. First and foremost, the group will be known as “Force™”. The Force™ 10-speed group will include integrated levers, front and rear derailleur, brake calipers, cranks, bottom bracket, chain, and cassette. The entire Force™ group’s projected weight is 2138 grams.

The Force™ shifting system will feature a “One lever, one direction, for both up and downshifts” shifting system. In short, SRAM’s “DoubleTap” shifting technology, allows both up and down shifts to be executed by a single inward pivoting shift lever.

Double Tap shifting works with a single lever located directly behind that of the brakes. Push this lever in towards the frame once for a downshift and then in a little further for a shift up in the cogset.

SRAM states that their dedicated shifter/dedicated brake lever system will equal “No brake movement during shifts”. Michael Zellmann, SRAM marketing manager, explained the system in our previous report this way, “We didn't want to create what had already been done. We want to exceed what currently exists. The brains of any new group really is the shifting. We were really trying to find an economical, ergonomic, efficient way to do that. We think Double Tap shifting is it."

This being a high-level road group, it should come as no surprise that SRAM’s engineered the Force™ group with a focus on light weight. Though we do not have the complete group weight at this time, SRAM states (as evidence) that the Force™ group’s integrated brake/shift levers tip the scales at 307 grams, or as their press release puts it, “111 grams less than a leading competitor – that’s a 25% weight savings at the handlebar!”.

The company is also making pains to highlight the new group’s advanced ergonomics. Force™ features unique right and left “fighter pilot” style shift levers, which, according to SRAM, equal superior control.

The Force™ group will be made from a range of lightweight materials, including magnesium, carbon, and aluminum.

SRAM® Force™ in Action While no one in the media seems to have logged any miles on the new Force™ group, several pros have. SRAM has sign on to sponsor the 12-rider Kodakgallery.com/Sierra Nevada (KGSN) pro team as well as the Spanish Orbea team.

KGSN will race at major U.S. events including the Sea Otter Classic, Tour of Georgia, as well as the USPRO Championships. Orbea will also compete at Sea Otter, but will follow a European calendar including the Tour de l’Avenir and the Euskatel Bicicletta.

SRAM is rolling out Force in a phased fashion. The company predicts that both KGSN and Team Orbea will be fully equipped with the SRAM road kit by April of this year. Consumers will get their first opportunity to check out the new componentry at the Sea Otter Classic, which follows SRAM’s global launch in April.

Shimano and FOX introduce 15mm through axle hubs and wheels

Shimano and FOX introduce a revolutionary 15mm through axle hub system in combination with a 100mm Over Locknut Dimension (OLD), targeted at All Mountain, Cross Country and Marathon usage. Shimano will be providing Deore XT and XTR level hubs as well as a Deore XT level complete front wheel for this system.

This new technology saves a lot of weight compared to the existing 20mm through axle system, while keeping almost the same rigidity. The 15mm standard allows not only a weight reduction on the hub, but especially on the fork, while increasing the rigidity of the system, so the benefit comes from the sum of all components together.

FOX forks incorporating the 15mm through axle system are 15% stiffer torsionally and 25% stiffer in transverse shear than a traditional quick release front axle system. This new 15 x 100 system is destined to be a completely open format so other fork, hub and axle makers can participate as well.

The XTR 15mm through axle hub HB-M978 is more than 100 grams lighter than the 20mm version HB-M976. HB-M978 has been developed with the Center Lock system just like HB-M778, the new front hub with 15mm through axle at Deore XT level. HB-M758 is a Deore XT level 15mm through axle front hub for 6 bolt rotors, carrying a neutral Shimano logo.

Shimano also introduces a complete Deore XT front wheel WH-M778 with this new 15 x 100 technology. It has 24 butted spokes and is compatible with tube and tubeless tires. It has a new sealing design that improves bearing durability by 400% with less seal drag than cartridge bearings. Combined with a WH-M775 Deore XT rear wheel it weighs 1702 g for a set.

Availability in the market: June 2008 (HB-M978/778/758)
September 2008 (WH-M778)

XTR. Three letters representing the pinnacle of mountain bike technology. Since its debut XTR has been the absolute standard for lightness, durability and performance. XTR is the benchmark by which all other off-road components are judged. Ride with quicker, faster control and response, anywhere you want.
